The Power of Cultivating a Growth MindsetApr 05, 2023
As a physician, coach and meditation teacher, I've seen firsthand the incredible power of the human mind. Our thoughts and beliefs can have a profound impact on our physical health, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.
One of the most important things I've learned in my years of practice is the importance of mindset. Our mindset is the lens through which we view the world, and it is constantly influencing our experiences and outcomes.
For example, if we approach a challenge with a negative, “woe is me” attitude, we’re way more likely to struggle and feel discouraged. On the other hand, if we approach the same challenge with a growth-oriented mindset, we’re more likely to tap into creativity and feel empowered.
The good news is that our mindset is not fixed. We have the power to shift our perspective and cultivate a more open, growth-oriented mindset. Meditation is a powerful tool for cultivating a growth mindset. Meditation helps us to become more aware of our thoughts and emotions, and to choose our relationship to our thoughts and emotions.
Through meditation, we can learn to observe our thoughts without judgment, and to let go of negative or limiting beliefs that hold us back. In other words, we don’t have to believe everything we think.
With specific meditation practices, we can also cultivate a sense of gratitude and abundance, which can help us to see opportunities and possibilities where we might have previously seen only obstacles.
The awareness we gain outside of our meditation practice is invaluable in shifting our mindset too. We can intentionally create new experiences that take us out of our comfort zone and stay curious rather than judging. We can even decide to embrace “failure”. My dear friend has a saying… “There is no failure, just lessons.” In fact, she even gifted me a photo with this wise reminder.
As a physician and coach, I see how mindset can impact our physical health. Studies have shown that a growth mindset can improve immune function, reduce stress and inflammation, and even lower the risk of chronic disease.
Meditation is a powerful way to bring our mindset, our thoughts into our awareness. By intentionally cultivating a growth-oriented mindset, we can approach life's challenges with resilience and optimism, and create a more fulfilling and meaningful life.
